![]() Fortunately, readers looking for graphic novels about surviving middle school have better options: Victoria Jamieson, Jerry Craft, Raina Telgemeier, and Svetlana Chmakova, to name only a few. It’s just a shame it has to begin with mean-spirited stereotypes of middle-school kids. Invisible Emmie will likely appeal to readers who also felt invisible, who wished others could see them as they are, could be their friends. Her story intertwines with that of Katie, a popular, self-confident girl beloved by all. Emmie still points out the kids who smell or who spit or who do other things readers are supposed to think are amusingly “so middle-school.” But the book starts to focus more on Emmie’s reticence, her fear of being seen, of speaking up for herself. Still, she comes across as a female Greg Heffley, trying to be funny with her “witty” observations of middle-school life, but ultimately just coming across as mean.Īfter this awkward introduction, the story does improve. Her only redeeming quality is that she keeps her unkind thoughts private instead of taunting kids to their faces. Emmie censures the school bully for making fun of others, but she does, too. She makes fun of them for being weird or smelly or having acne or having a “disability,” which she tries to make seem less horrible by then describing a “math disability” (that is, the kid just struggles in math–he, does not, as far as we know, actually have a learning disability). Unfortunately, Emmie positions herself as a normal, relatable character by making it clear that others in her school are not normal. I had hopes this would be a story about Emmie finding her way, not by discovering an amazing, hidden talent, but just by being herself. As a result, she does not believe she could ever be a heroine in a story. She is not an outsider because awkward or weird or anything. Invisible Emmie is initially interesting because it seeks to put a twist on the trope of the outsider protagonist, as Emmie herself notes. Emmie’s mockery of her fellow classmates ultimately makes her less of a likable–or relatable–protagonist than she is supposed to be, taking away power from her story. ![]() Clearly inspired by Diary of Wimpy Kid (published ten years prior), Invisible Emmie attempts to provide humor by making fun of middle-school stereotypes, even as protagonist Emmie struggles herself with trying to fit in and survive bullying. ![]() Invisible Emmie proves an uneven addition to the number of middle-school graphic novels currently on the market. Testers found that the Neoshell fabric of the Pyramid jacket did provide a fairly breathable product, and had no complaints while skiing in bounds. In periods of exceptionally heavy snowfall, there was a little water spotting on mid layers that appeared along the zipper line, indicating the front zipper and flap let it through. It did a great job of this, and testers never worried about the durability of the waterproofness of the fabric itself. The Pyramid jacket relies on the new Polartec Neoshell fabric to keep out wind, rain and snow. Strafe also fixed a two-way adjustable hood to the pyramid jacket, but testers found it to be grossly oversized. Testers did find that the forearm pass pocket was difficult to operate with gloves due to the length of the sleeves, causing excess fabric to pile up and the zipper would then have nothing to pull against-moot though when using an RFID pass. The Pyramid jacket also features a removable snow skirt, extra long pit zips and built in wrist gaiters. One of the chest pockets also has a built in pouch for storing a phone, and a headphone port to prevent that unsightly wire from having to run externally and getting in the way. With all that space to store snacks, extra gloves, goggles and a beverage or two, testers never had to worry about having everything they needed when wearing this piece. The Pyramid jacket has two massive chest pockets, two zippered hand pockets, and two interior pockets (one zippered pocket, and one open mesh pouch) and a zippered forearm pass pocket. Testers loved all the places to put any goodies needed for a day on the hill. One of the best parts of the Pyramid jacket is the abundance of storage space that it provides. Water resistant zippers and Velcro cuffs help to keep the elements out. Testers were pleased with the durability and longevity of the piece, which held color and shape after many abusive days on the slopes. As for what people will play at future GDQs, video games are still the focus, but: “I'm sure somebody’s going to try and submit a board game at some point,” Merkle said.Resident Evil games have always encouraged quick playthroughs, especially since each game invariably gives you a rank based off of your completion time. ![]() The goal, he says, is to “push the community towards more inclusivity.” He also hopes to run more online events and to find ways to showcase more Black runners and other people from less represented groups. It’s part of an effort, Merkle says, to address how male-dominated the field has been. What’s next: GDQ will run another event in February focusing on female speedrunners. The silver lining of the virtual format, GDQ director of operations Matt Merkle tells Axios, is that it opens the event to players of a broader spectrum who might not have been able to afford to come to the event to do their runs in person. The events have drawn 3,000 live spectators in recent years but switched to virtual-only in mid-2020 due to COVID.Donations during the event go to charities, with GDQ taking in revenue through a fee with their charity partner and advertising. They began in 2010 in the basement of speedrunning aficionado Mike Uyama and are operated largely by volunteers working in concert with GDQs four or so full-time employees. The event's so-called Awful Block will feature a run of a notoriously bad Sonic: The Hedgehog game made for .īetween the lines: The GDQ events are grassroots, especially compared to the spectacles put on by the corporate giants of the gaming and esports industries.Promising runs for next week also include a multiplayer race in GeoGuessr, a game that places users in a random spot in Google Maps’ street view and then challenges them to figure out where they are (in an extraordinary 2020 demonstration, a speedrunner could identify the correct country in seconds).(Blindfold runs have been a mainstay of GDQ for nearly a decade, arguably reaching their apex in 2020 when two blindfolded men beat Nintendo classic Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out while sharing one controller). However, noticeable differences are found across languages with grammatical gender, depending on whether it is overtly coded in the nominal domain (Romance languages) and/or in the verbal domain (Basque, Hebrew), and in the specific categories bearing the feature (nouns (Ns), pronouns, determiners (Dets), adjectives, participles, or verb (V) inflections), and in the morphological marking (suffix/prefix/suppletive forms). Grammatical gender is a nominal feature coded in the lexicon and/or the morphology of many, though not all, languages. Regression analyses show that for both groups, morphological cues have more weight than the nature of the referent in participants’ assignment of gender to novel words, and that the L1 Sp group is more attentive to FEM morphological markers than the BDB group, pointing towards the existence of differences in the strength of cue-patterns for gender marking. Results reveal a general preference for MASC gender across conditions, especially in BDB children, who produced masculine modifiers for 83% of items, while the L1 Sp children did so for only 63% of items. Data were collected from 49 5- to 6-year-old Spanish-speaking children-28 monolingual L1 Spanish (L1 Sp) and 21 Basque-dominant (L1 Basque-L2 Spanish) bilinguals (BDB). The goals were to determine the extent to which participants rely on biological cues (female referent =>FEM gender, male referent =>MASC gender) and morpho-phonological cues (- a ending =>FEM, - o ending =>MASC, others =>MASC or FEM) to assign gender to pseudowords/novel words and whether bilinguals’ language dominance (Spanish strong/weak) has an effect. ![]() We analyze data collected via a production task designed to elicit 48 DPs, controlling for gender of referents and for number and types of morphological cues to grammatical gender. This study examines gender marking in the Spanish of Basque-Spanish bilingual children. It’s not too flashy, but it’s an important part of every Faceless Menace upgrade. LandsĪs a three color deck, you should pay attention to your lands. Putrefy is also good and it’s pretty cheap too. Assassin’s Trophy and Casualties of War are both very versatile and you’ll probably always have a good target for them. It will make each one of your blue decks better. It’s quite pricey, but it really is a true Commander staple. They would both fit nicely in the deck.īecause you have blue in your deck, you will want Cyclonic Rift. The deck is missing two great ramp spells in Rampant Growth and Kodama’s Reach. Manifest is another face-down mechanic which plays nicely with the deck theme. It’s situational but can be quite powerful if you set it up correctly against a multiple opponents. However there is a noteworthy exception however in Brine Elemental. Most of the Morph creatures are already in the deck. You can play a morph or two in your turn and then unmorph them during your opponents’ turn. Wilderness Reclamation is another good one. Ugin is particularly nice since it has other uses too. You can do so with Dream Chisel or Ugin, the Ineffable. Sadly, you won’t always have Kadena in play or you’ll want to play more than one morph creature. Kadena helps with your first morph which is great. Morph or no – three mana for a 2/2 creature is still a subpar rate. You can however return it to your hand with cards like Thousand Winds so you can cast it normally. If it’s not a creature, it’s just stays on the battlefield as a 2/2. If it’s a creature card, you may turn it face-up at instant speed for its mana cost. You put the top card of your library face down as a 2/2 creature. A card can instruct you to manifest another card – usually from the top of your library but it can be from other zones. Manifest is another way of playing cards face-down. As such this keyword only appears on creatures.Įxamples: Ainok Survivalist, Den Protector How Does Manifest Work? When you turn the creature with Megamorph face up, you put an +1/+1 counter on it. ![]() Mostly the same as Morph – with one small upside. It’s also great because it let’s you do something in the early game and still have powerful options in the late game. This way your opponents won’t know what’s waiting for them face-down. Especially if you have lots of them in your deck. Morph is usually a fun mechanic to play with. You can even set up situations to reuse your creatures if needed. Then you wait for the perfect opportunity and return a bunch of opponents’ creatures to their hands. You might have more mana though, or only three – in both cases you can play Thousand Winds face down for 3. No problem, you can just ignore the whole morph text, pay 4UU and cast Thousand Winds as a 5/6 flyer. Let’s say you have six mana and just need a big flyer. Take a look at Thousand Winds for example. This process doesn’t use the stack – this means players can’t Shock your face-down creature in response to you paying the morph cost.Ī lot of morph card will also come with an additional benefit for turning them face up. This means they can be cast face down for 3 mana as a 2/2 colorless creatures without creature types.Īt any time player can cast an instant spell, they can pay its morph cost to turn the creature face up. If you’re a more enfranchised player, feel free to skip the next paragraph. Before we do that, we’ll check how face-down creatures and Morph works. We’ll take a look at both of those two groups. Synergy is important – but good cards will really improve your win rate. On the other hand you shouldn’t forget about the simply good cards. The frequency of the vibration (time between each vibrational pulse) depends on two factors: the distance of an object and the size of its surface area. IGlasses are equipped with ultrasonic sensors located on the front of the frame, and when an object is detected, the iGlasses emit a pulsating vibration. Features Understanding How iGlasses Detect Objects In light of this product being marketed as a mobility aid for people with little or no vision, providing a larger size font, such as 22- and/or 26-point, and including the manual in electronic format would provide a greater level of accessibility. The instructions are laid out in 14- and 16-point font along with diagrams. The manual that comes with the iGlasses effectively describes the basic operation and features of the device. Pressing and holding the button for an additional second will turn the unit off. The small, rubberized power button is located on the outside of the right arm, and the glasses are activated by pressing and holding this button for one second. A small, inconspicuous thumbwheel on the underside of the right arm of the frame allows you to adjust the level of intensity of the vibrational signal the glasses emit when detecting objects. You are given the option of clear lenses or tinted dark amber lenses, both of which provide UV400 protection. The glasses come with a one-page, double-sided User Manual. They come with a soft protective pouch, and you have the option of charging the unit's built-in lithium-ion battery using an AC charger or the USB connection included with the device. IGlasses weigh less than three ounces, are black in color, and roughly resemble a pair of NoIR wrap around sun filters. This product is the type of integrated and multipurpose design consumers are increasingly coming to expect, but are these iGlasses all that they're cracked up to be? This product evaluation will explore the pros and cons of this electronic mobility aid to help you better determine whether or not this product is right for you.Ĭaption: Photo of iGlasses Physical Design Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in the UK and AmbuTech of Canada have partnered to create a pair of sunglasses called iGlasses that detect nearby objects and alert travelers through vibration. For several reasons, including improved industry standards, an ever-expanding digital age, and stronger advocacy on behalf of consumers, people who are blind or visually impaired have come to expect a greater level of performance and integration with access devices these days. If you want to look up the weather forecast for the next few days, locate a specific address, find out if a financial transaction occurred, or scope out the nearest restaurant, this can all be done using a smartphone. This seems to also hold true for people who are blind or visually impaired. Technology is increasingly trending toward simplicity and integration with our daily activities. |
